I read somewhere that there were cultural differences - in asian culture sometimes kids felt more motivated when the choices were made by their parents, but american kids felt less motivated when they found out the choice was made by their parents. Is this true? I guess it makes a lot of sense - only in a culture where there is a concept of the individual would a person feel less motivated by extrinsic factors.

These conclusions match one of my experiences in the corporate world: it's much more fun to implement an idea that I came up with myself, than to execute what has been decided (which can feel like a drag beforehand).
